Nissan Announces Plan To Grow Presence In Argentina

Nissan Americas today announced a new business strategy to grow the company’s presence in Argentina through a partnership with Manuel Antelo. The new arrangement, to begin in late 2011, will strengthen Nissan’s sales, service and distribution operations in Argentina and provide sustainable growth in one of the world’s key automotive marketplaces.

Renault Argentina S. A., Nissan’s present distributor in Argentina, will continue to support the company’s business through the end of 2011. At that time responsibility for Nissan branded products in Argentina will be assumed by Antelo.

“Today is an important milestone for Nissan growth in Argentina,” said Carlos Tavares, Chairman, Nissan Americas. “While Renault Argentina S. A. has been a key contributor to the success of the Nissan brand in this country, we know that distinct business structures are now the best roads for both brands’ business growth in Argentina. By forming a separate Nissan operation we allow Renault to concentrate on its business while positioning the Nissan brand for growth acceleration in this market. This reinforces our long-term commitment to Argentina.”

Antelo, an entrepreneur with more than two decades experience within the automotive industry, is currently owner and President of CAT Group – a French multinational company specializing in vehicle and parts logistics. He is also co-owner with Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the Scandinavian Maritime group, of Vehicle Service America, an American company specializing in vehicle logistics. Antelo is also owner of Car One Argentina, the largest automotive retail business in the country.

“I am very excited about working together with Nissan to strengthen the opportunities the company has in my country,” said Antelo. “I am certain that Nissan and its dealers will grow faster and more consistently in the years to come. I am also very proud to have been selected as Nissan’s local partner.”

Nissan Posts Strong Sales Results In August

Strong sales and a significantly improved share of the light commercial vehicle market have lifted Nissan South Africa’s market performance as the motor industry continues to recover from the effects of a troubled economy.

Total industry passenger and light commercial vehicle sales for August, as reported by Naamsa, show an encouraging improvement of 35,7% compared to the same month last year. Sales for the first eight months of the year compared to the same period in 2009 are up 20,3%.

Nissan South Africa’s passenger vehicle sales were up 44,9% compared to the same month a year ago and improved by 23,8% for the first eight months of the year, matching the industry’s overall performance.

Nissan LCV sales year-to-date rose 31,7% compared to the same period last year, beating the industry’s growth in this sector of 12,9%. In the process Nissan has improved its share of the LCV market by 2,4% to 17,0% for the year to date.

“August sales were clearly influenced by the introduction of the new carbon tax legislation that came into effect on September 1,” said Johan Kleynhans, Nissan South Africa’s director of marketing, sales and after sales. “There was considerable publicity given to this new tax on motorists and many new car buyers would have brought their purchase decision forward.

Nissan1400 Fever Rocks Mokopane!

The infield of the Trever Els oval raceway just outside of Mokopane trembled to the tune of meticulously tuned engines on Saturday 28th August , as the sun glinted off a healthy crowd of South African legends each built to a unique formula and specification, but sharing an important common bond. The Nissan brand affixed to the nose, as well as a well-earned reputation for total dependability and strength far beyond the cute but racy looks.

Despite one of the vehicles boasting a power output of 1000 horsepower on the wheels, this isn’t a convention of throbbing GT-R supercars. No, this is Mokopane’s homage to the epic Nissan 1400 bakkie, perhaps better known as the venerable Champ. Although boasting dainty dimensions and a budget list price, this vehicle also packs one of the largest hearts in the business, and has been both trusted work partner and weekend toy for many of the down-to-Earth residents of this small Limpopo community, and many others like it, since 1971.

This gathering of all incarnations of Nissan 1400 half-tonner (model name B140) was arranged to celebrate this legendary LCV, which endured for nearly four decades as the ideal dual-purpose work-and-play half-ton offering in the South African market. This lovable workhorse was only recently replaced by the new Nissan NP200, now with an even larger, more robust load area than ever before but the same DNA. Whether working or playing, the old B140 and new NP200 are peerless in their strength, reliability, and unique sense of panache when the time comes to kick back and enjoy life.

There are several better-than-pristine examples of the original Datsun-badged bakkie in attendance. Two of these models feature the 1400cc engine of the last-generation versions, complete with twin carburettors, gas-flowed heads and a much freer-flowing exhaust than was ever standard fit. Most bear the more common, subtly updated Nissan 1400 styling, together making for a heart-warming collection ranging from hard-living daily worker to carbonfibre-bedecked road-race specials.

Johann Oeloffse not only had a replica of the original 1400 dash, with space for a couple of extra gauges, moulded entirely from this space age material, but also proceeded to buy the mould that was created for him from the carbonfibre specialist involved. “So that no-one else could have a dashboard like this – it’s an absolute one of a kind.”

Lexus CT 200h Equipped with Active and Passive Safety Features

Torrance, Calif. – Like all Lexus vehicles, CT 200h will be equipped with many standard active safety features including an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRAC) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC).

The four-channel, four-sensor ABS helps reduce stopping time and improves control while braking. EBD monitors all four wheels during braking and varies brake pressure to each wheel based on driving conditions and available traction.

During hard braking the BA system helps boost braking force when the driver does not apply enough pressure to the brake pedal. BA intervenes when the system senses that the driver’s action indicates an emergency-stopping situation and allows the driver to benefit from more of the vehicle’s full braking power.

TRAC helps optimize traction by working with the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS), ABS and VSC to help prevent the drive wheels from spinning while accelerating under slippery conditions.

The VSC system is designed to help identify when the tires experience lateral slippage during cornering, or turning on slippery road surfaces. VSC responds by applying the brakes and reducing the throttle to help keep the vehicle on track. VSC works in concert with ABS and TRAC systems on slippery or dry road surfaces.

The CT 200h will incorporate a standard eight airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) with dual-stage airbags and knee airbags for driver and front passenger, side curtain airbags, and front seat-mounted side airbags to help protect passengers in certain types of severe frontal or side collisions.

Hyundai’s next generation MPV set for Paris world premiere

At this year’s Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris on September 30th, Hyundai will celebrate the world premiere of its new compact MPV (Multi Purpose Vehicle). To be presented as the Hyundai ix20, a sketch of the new model shows a striking departure from the boxy ‘minivan’ image typically associated with the segment, adopting a more dynamic, sportier profile in line with Hyundai’s reputation as a modern, progressive automaker.

Designed and developed at Hyundai’s European R&D centre in Rüsselsheim, Germany; the ix20 is the third car, following the ix35 and i45, to adopt Hyundai’s new ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language. The name ix20 reflects the new model’s crossover-like versatility – a vehicle with the ability to simultaneously serve as a functional people-carrier while providing a dynamic, fun-to-drive experience and is scheduled to go on sale in Europe in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Another model making its world premiere at Paris is the 2011 i10. This upgraded version of Hyundai’s popular city car benefits from a comprehensive set of enhancements in terms of design, specification and competiveness – including a new 1.0-litre engine with CO2 emissions of just 99 g/km.

Hyundai i30 CRDi tames the Wild West

Australia - The Hyundai Motor Company Australia backed i30 CRDi has taken on the Quit Targa West 2010 rally to finish second in its class and fourth overall in a category filled with more powerful competitors.

The multi-award winning i30 CRDi turbo diesel competed within the ‘Challenge Modern’ category, up against performance cars such as an Audi RS4, Nissan GTR35s and a Ford Mustang Cobra.

Even with the category speed limited to 130km/h the smaller engine capacity of the i30 put it at a substantial disadvantage against cars with over twice as much power at their disposal. With final results of a second place in the class ahead of the RS4, and an overall fourth place in the Challenge Modern Category the feisty i30 CRDi proved it takes more than power to perform well in the west.

Australia’s most popular and highest selling diesel passenger car was the only diesel in the Quit Targa West 2010 rally and was also the most fuel efficient and economical in the line up. Despite the pressures of competition, the i30 achieved amazing fuel economy, recording an average of 7.1 l/100km over the course of the event.

i30’s quality and reliability meant no major service or repair works were completed during the 3-day event with only standard daily maintenance required.

“As always, the reliability and dependability of the i30 CRDi meant I could concentrate on the demanding course,” said Hyundai’s team driver Razvan Vlad. “The class was very competitive with the other drivers all in fast performance cars capable of much quicker acceleration than us, and they were pushing it.”

The rally took in some of the most picturesque countryside in the Perth region including the infamous Zig Zag stage which was run three times during the event. For the first time the race finished in the CBD with a spectacular stage run along the Swan River Foreshore and providing spectators with an opportunity to really get close to the rally action.

“We really enjoyed this rally. We also tried to put on a good show for the spectators and consistently set top three times in each stage over the entire weekend,” said Vlad.

Daimler AG starts a further pilot project in Ulm – “ride sharing 2.0″ with car2gether

After car2go Daimler AG has now developed a further innovative concept for urban mobility: car2gether starts with a first pilot project in Ulm, that also provides an answer to the question of how flexible and independent mobility can be achieved without car ownership.

car2gether is a web-based ride sharing community arranging incoming offers and requests for lifts. The system takes advantage of the increasing use and acceptance and the many different communication possibilities offered by mobile internet. Rides can be arranged via smartphones on the way or from a PC at home – almost in real time.

The idea for this concept was developed by the Business Innovation division at Daimler AG which identifies business areas with future potential. Business Innovation is presenting a complementary solution for the advancing changes in individual mobility. Futurologists expect that due to the living conditions in cities, an increasing number of people will not own a car at all in future (“zero-car households”). Project Manager Michael Kuhn: “There is still a need for flexible, convenient and inexpensive mobility. With car2gether, we exactly offer these advantages and also encourage the more efficient use of resources.”

Mercedes-Benz increases sales worldwide by 22 percent in August, posting double-digit growth for the tenth month in a row

Stuttgart – Sales of Mercedes-Benz vehicles continue to increase. In August, the brand posted double-digit growth for the tenth month in a row. Sales were up by 22 percent, and deliveries to customers around the world amounted to 81,000 units last month (August 2009: 66,200). Since the beginning of the year, Mercedes-Benz has now sold 735,400 passenger cars, an increase of 16 percent from the figure recorded during the same period in 2009.

“The growth recorded by Mercedes-Benz in August marks a continuation of the current positive trend,” says Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz Cars. “We boosted sales in nearly all the regions we operate in and also posted strong growth in August in Germany, which is our biggest sales market. We expect sales to continue to develop favorably in the coming months as well. Worldwide, we want sales at Mercedes-Benz to grow at a double-digit rate in full-year 2010.” The brand’s growth continues to be driven primarily by the E-Class and S-Class, as well as by sales increases in China and the U.S. “We will be presenting a further highlight of our product range at the Paris Motor Show, where we will present the all-new generation of our styling icon, the CLS. The car will set new standards, thanks to its fascinating design, comprehensive range of safety features, and the new, fuel-efficient V6 and V8 BlueDIRECT gasoline engines.”

Mercedes-Benz recorded sales growth in its three main markets of Germany, the U.S., and China in August. Developments were particularly pleasing in the brand’s largest market, Germany. Here Mercedes-Benz bucked the overall downward trend (minus 27 percent) with a significant increase in sales of 17 percent, leading to total deliveries of 15,800 passenger vehicles to customers last month (August 2009: 13,500). The E-Class, the E-Class coupe, the C-Class, and the smart fortwo all had the largest number of new vehicle registrations in their respective segments in Germany.

The United States remains the second biggest market for Mercedes-Benz, and thus a key contributor to the brand’s sales success. Sales in the U.S. rose ten percent last month, leading to customer deliveries of 18,800 units (August 2009: 17,100). Year-to-date unit sales for Mercedes-Benz in the U.S. now total 139,900 vehicles, up 18 percent compared with the same period last year (118,400). This result makes Mercedes-Benz the best-selling German premium brand in the country since the beginning of the year. Mercedes-Benz posted record sales of 2,100 vehicles in Canada, an increase of five percent compared to August 2009.

Economical and eco-friendly: Mercedes-Benz CharterWay adds FleetBoard-equipped Sprinters to its fleet

Berlin – Mercedes-Benz CharterWay is adding approximately 120 Sprinters equipped with Daimler’s FleetBoard fleet management system to its fleet of rental vehicles.

CharterWay, a provider of commercial vehicle services, already has more than 2,500 FleetBoard-equipped trucks in its fleet. Now, vans featuring this Internet-based telematics system are being added for the first time. Mercedes-Benz CharterWay will gradually replace all the Sprinters in its rental fleet that do not yet have FleetBoard as standard.

“The addition of FleetBoard-equipped Sprinters to the rental fleet enables us to offer our customers another vehicle that combines high cost-effectiveness with environmental compatibility and innovation,” says Ralf Bernhard, Managing Director of Mercedes-Benz CharterWay.

The vehicles can be rented for periods as short as 24 hours or for longer periods extending over several weeks or months.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki Fights Through Steel City National

The penultimate round of the 2010 AMA Pro Motocross season at the legendary Steel City Raceway in Delmont, PA, saw Rockstar Energy Suzuki’s Austin Howell post his best results since his professional debut at Unadilla. The young racer, who was competing at Loretta Lynn’s for an amateur title just a few short weeks ago, piloted his fuel-injected RM-Z450 to 11-16 finishes to take 15th overall in the pro class. Austin has made steady progress as he gains more experience racing as a professional, and hopes to draw on that experience to post his best results at the upcoming Pala race.

Austin’s teammate and fellow 450 rider Tommy Hahn suffered a crash during practice before the race, leaving him with a separated shoulder. Despite the injury, Tommy lined up at the start of moto 1, and launched off the line inside the top five. Tommy ran as high as fourth before the shoulder injury began to take its toll, and Tommy pulled off the track around the halfway mark.

In the 250 class, Ian Trettel also took a shoulder injury in moto 1. Trettel suffered the injury when he went down in turn one, but continued to ride. A subsequent crash took him out of the race. Trettel will be taking some time off the bike to recover, which means he will be missing the final round of the 2010 season at Pala. “I just want everyone to know that I’m OK,” said Trettel. “I’m going to take a couple of weeks off, then I’m going to get right into Supercross training.”
